Origins of Human Malaria: Rare Genomic Changes and Full Mitochondrial Genomes Confirm the Relationship of Plasmodium falciparum to Other Mammalian Parasites but Complicate the Origins of Plasmodium vivax

Scott William Roy and Manuel Irimia

Mol. Biol. Evol. 25(6):1192–1198. 2008. doi:10.1093/molbev/msn069

We wrongly reported a ~100 bp deletion in mitochondrial genomes of some primate malaria parasites. This was due to misinterpretation, by one of us (SWR), of nearly complete genomic sequences in GenBank as truly complete genome sequences. Our finding regarding the evolutionary relationships of P. vivax and closely related species should therefore be disregarded. All other findings remain unaffected. We thank Susan Perkins, as well as Toshiyuki Hayakawa and coauthors, for pointing out our mistake, and apologize for our error.
