Treasurer's Report for Financial Year 2006
Society's total assets as of 31 May 2007:
- Cash accounts: $579,414.02.
- Total CDs: $161,183.66.
We have changed our fiscal year to run from 1 June to 31 May, as our journal income arrives late in the spring, and the new date greatly simplifies accounting. This year's report covers January 2006 through May 2007; future reports will cover June–May.
The journal is our major source of revenue. The journal again performed even better than in the previous year, owing to both excellent editorial effort and the skill of our publisher. Membership also slightly increased (39 new members), perhaps due to membership incentives with meeting registration and/or encouraging the growth of the society via student travel awards. This is especially pleasing given ongoing trends of decreasing membership in other scientific societies. This year we saw a spectacular increase of $93,570 over the adjusted income from last year.
We used our income to publish the journal, hire a webmaster, increase the amount of seed money we provide for our annual meetings, fund the Fitch prize and travel for contestants, provide additional graduate student travel awards, run our Undergraduate Diversity Mentoring Program, introduce travel rewards for associate editors, and fund Council travel.
