Purpose
|
|---|
To encourage scientific excellence among its young investigators,
SMBE has sponsored three young investigator workshops associated
with the annual meetings. The manuscripts that follow represent
the diverse talks presented at the third Young Investigators'
Workshop (SMBEYI-3), held 2427 June 2005 in Palmerston
North, NZ and co-organized by the US, Japan, and New Zealand.
Seven applicants were chosen from each country; each gave a
30 minute presentation as well as participating in discussions
about one another's work.
 |
Goals
|
|---|
The goals of the SMBEYI workshops are: 1) to promote collaborations
among the top young investigators in the field; 2) to expand
the breadth of knowledge among young investigators; and 3) to
enhance diversity in the field. Two previous young investigators'
workshops, held in 1995 and 1997, were highly successful as
measured by both the positive responses of workshop alumni,
and subsequent professional success of participants. The first
workshop was in Japan (US and Japan co-organized); the second
was in Germany (US, Japan, and Germany co-organized).

Acknowledgements for SMBEYI-3
|
|---|
This third workshop was supported by funding from the US National
Science Foundation (Grant DEB-0513016), generous funding from
the supervisors and lab heads of the Japanese participants,
and funding from the Allan Wilson Centre. We are also very grateful
to M. Stevens, who coordinated the program and served as local
contact person.
